March 26, 2010 – From the Front Lines: Has EUV development cost more than the Manhattan Project?
Factoids from the edge: Some like to say that EUV development has cost more than the Manhattan Project, the largest scientific undertaking up to that time. $2B was spent, but that was in 1940. In 2010, it would have cost $31.6B if we use the Consumer Price Index. However, I would argue that this is an error. Instead, we should use the relative share of GDP, because it had nothing to do with consumer goods and everything to do with the government. By that measure, the Manhattan Project cost $281B in today’s dollars. Either way, the development of EUV has not beaten the Manhattan Project on cost.
