VLSI Research Inc.

The first automation attempts in the semiconductor industry go back to the seventies. One of those efforts was IBM’s QTAT fab. Mihir Parikh was there and then went on to HP where he and a team of engineers developed the first portable mini-environments called SMIF, for Standard Mechanical InterFace. It would take 20 years for Mihir’s vision of mini-environments to become the industry’s standard. But today, that is the only way that fabs are built. It is important not only for its technical impact, but also because mini-environments softened the dreaded silicon cycle by making it possible to add capacity in small increments. Find out about this amazing history in this video from a man who has seen it all.
